Assessment of Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Surgical Patients at a Referral Teaching Hospital in Western Iran

Background: Antibiotic prophylaxis is often used by surgeons to prevent surgical site infection (SSI) following operations. Despite the availability of several national guidelines for proper antibiotic prophylaxis, adherence guideline recommendations, especially in developing countries, still sub-optimal. This study aimed assess American Society Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) prophylactic use among a referral hospital western Iran. Methods: prospective cross-sectional was conducted surgery wards tertiary affiliated with Hamadan University Medical Sciences, Hamadan, Iran, six consecutive months from February 1 July 31, 2019. The records 264 patients who were randomly chosen admitted reviewed. appropriateness parameters including indication, choice, dose, timing first and duration assessed against ASHP guidelines. Results: A total 248 (93.94%) received prophylaxis. Only 32.2% procedures, full all AHSP achieved. In significant percentage antibiotics administered inappropriately more than 24 hours (59.21%). Regarding selection (92.1%), dose (88.6%), administration (89.9%), rate recommendations relatively satisfactory our hospital.
